Hillary was a mountaineer from New Zealand and Tenzing a local Sherpa. Together they braved the cruellest weather conditions and biting cold to climb the world?s tallest mountain peak,Mount Everest ,in 1953 .They were not the first to try .

But their was the first successful attempt. Earlier, Malory and Irving had died during their effort to scale Everest in 1924.
